Imagine yourself, in a situation, where you get given a box that will give you anything you ask for with the idea that you trade an equal amount of your life for. The bigger the ask, the more years will be taken, for you to receive it; but the real gag is that you don’t know how many years will be taken, until you get what you ask for and the exchange is completed. Would you play it safe and ask for something small in the hopes of a longer life and less years taken or ask for something huge and weigh your instant gratification against the short life ahead of you? I suppose the bigger question is the metric used to convert the value. Let’s suppose value is in the eye of the beholder so the more important something is to you, the more value it would carry to you and translate into years. It sounds like a crazy scenario but we make this exact decision every single day of our lives. We trade away the years of our lives, with jobs and financial choices in the pursuit of a life or lifestyle that we want. The more important something is to us, we have no problem sacrificing more of our quality years and time to chase. You ask someone who as gone to work and beat down their bodies for their families and they would probably overwhelmingly do it all again for the people they love. Its an easy trade to find real happiness and if we are lucky enough to experience it, there is nothing we can weigh against it that we wouldn’t give. The real question is what is real happiness and how does that translate into real world living and experiences. What do you think? If you were in that situation, what would you ask for…what’s in the box?
