Something that I heard as a child that has stuck with me, is that locks only keep honest men honest. Let’s be real for a second, a lock is not the hardest thing to defeat and any able bodied person has the strength so smash through a window if they really wanted to. Why is it that we still have windows in cars and houses? Do you lock the door, knowing that the door is by far not the weakest entry point? Have you gone the extra mile and replaced all the screws that hold your frame plate with the longest ones that it will hold? Are doorstops a thing in your home, in every room, in case there is an intruder? There are so many different ways to get into a house, car, locker or otherwise, despite there being a lock, so why do we use them. I feel like there is a connection with people and a social understanding or agreement that something locked is generally off limits. I think there is something deep in our psyche that keeps honest people honest, especially if they see any effort in the form of someone protecting and securing what’s theirs. What a world it would be if we could leave the doors unlocked and our valuables out in the open without a worry in the world that someone will take it. I’ve always had a hardened perspective over thieves. There is absolutely no respect they will get from me, if they are stealing people’s personal belongings. Probably one of the reasons I hate income tax so much. Either way, what do you think? Is a lock more of a visual deterrent than a physical one? Do you alarm your house or trust the locks? When is the last time you were tempted to take something but a lock turned you away? When’s the last time you lost something to a thief and wished you had locked it up?
